Apple has hailed the success of its App Store, which sells applications for the iPhone and iPod touch, as it posts an unexpectedly strong 9% increase in second quarter revenues.
It says there are now 35,000 different apps available for the devices, with the one billionth download from the store just “hours away”. Brands, such as Carling which last year created a ‘lager drinking’ app, are increasingly looking to the platform as a marketing medium.
Net profits for the three months to March 28 increased to $1.21 billion (£835 million), up from $1.05 billion the year before, with revenues up by nearly 9% to $8.16 billion, compared with $7.96 billion the year before.
It shifted 3.8 million iPhones in the quarter, more than twice as many as a year ago, despite the economic downturn and a new version expected to launch later this year. The company also sold more than 11 million iPods, up 3% on a year ago.
Demand for the handheld devices offset weaker Mac computer sales, which fell by 3% to 2.22 million units.
