Marketing salaries are always contentious! Are you looking to make the big bucks in your career?
Marketers should be looking to work for the manufacturing or private services sector for the biggest marketing salaries.
That’s according to findings from the new Croner Rewards Marketing Rewards Survey issued by the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
Data was collected in May and June 2007 from almost 2,000 members of the CIM and provides the most up to date picture of the marketing landscape.
Marketing Managers who work in the manufacturing sector on average fare better than their counterparts. They earn the most on £42,000 a year. Those in consultancy earn the least, on £38,500 a year.
For Heads of Marketing however, those in the public services earn the most on £56,875 a year.
The industries which spend the most on marketing are retail and publishing. Both of these spend around four per cent of their turnover in marketing. Manufacturing, Telecomms and Computer Services also spend above average.
The average marketing spend by companies however is generally 1.4 per cent. That figure is fractionally down from 1.8 per cent last year. The lowest spenders are in the Distribution sector, spending 0.6 per cent.

So is marketing the best paid profession compared with other career paths? Make it to the top and the answer is ‘yes’, with Heads of Marketing on average being paid better than their counterparts in Finance, IT and HR.
But for those at more junior level, the story’s not so good being paid slightly below the all function average.
