Social media is claiming a victory over traditional media in being the first to report the death of Michael Jackson.

Reports of the star’s demise broke on Twitter and Facebook ahead of CNN, MSNBC
and Fox, according to SearchEngineJournal.com.

The first official news network to break the news, it claims, was AOL’s TMZ Blog.

Celebrities were some of the first to comment on Jackson’s death on Twitter. Their comments were quickly retweeted alongside the TMZ story.

International film star and celebrity, Lindsay Lohan Tweeted, “NO OMG … sending my love and prayers out to Michael and his family … i feel sick.”

Meanwhile, fellow actor, Marlon Wayans , Tweeted, “My prayers, my love, my heart goes out to michael jackson and the entire jackson family. I pray so hard for them. I’m crushed! Please pray.”

Editor of Search Engine Journal, Loren Baker, said, “Only in a social media controlled world would we see a Twitterised ‘revolution’ in Iran, and the breaking news of Michael Jackson’s death.”

In terms of search relevance, even with conflicting news amongst various media outlets and social media as the story broke, it’s been claimed that Google was slow to pick up on the news.

The search giant showed only one headline in its Google News Universal Search Onebox about the rumoured passing of Jackson, alongside others about his jewellery and one about Lou Ferigno training the singer.

However, despite what’s being labeled as a poor performance, it was still streaks ahead of Microsoft Bing.

“Microsoft Bing absolutely failed in their coverage of the passing of Michael,” said Baker.
